WooHoo! Book #2 of the Pacey Packer Unicorn Tracker graphic novel series, Horn Slayer, is here. (Published on June 1, 2021 by the wonderful people at Random House Graphic.)
Each of these books takes me about a year to complete, so it’s such a thrill when they come out into the world. Let me tell you a little bit about it.
Pacey and her sister Mina are dog-sitting in the park one day and Pacey is trying to figure out a way to journey back to Rundalyn and save the statue children, when suddenly a rainbow beams down to the ground and off jumps and old friend of Slasher’s – a boy named Carlos. Before she knows it, Pacey and the crew are back in Rundalyn!
(Above) This is the 2-page spread that starts off Chapter 3.
Although some mogs were featured in Book 1 as servants of the castle, Book 2 introduces them properly. Mogs are creatures who live in Rundalyn. They are short and gentle and very good with their hands, which is why they are often used as crafters around the castle. You might see them painting or weaving. They are lovely. The problem is, they are not very powerful and the unicorns have been using them for years. So, although Pacey has returned to help save the three human children that Arkane turned into statues, she learns there are more creatures that need saving from Arkane’s reign.
Here’s Eldermog, the leader of the mogs in Mog Gully.
And this is a peek behind the process of making the graphic novel. On the left is the early thumbnail sketch of a scene with Lucky the dog. (That’s the pooch Pacey is dog sitting.) And on the right is the finished product in the book.
And here’s a great review from Kirkus -
“Nonstop action, expressive artwork, and witty asides give this strong reader appeal. A refreshing change of pace for unicorn devotees a bit weary of the sugary, mild-mannered sort.” —Kirkus Reviews
